Jewel of the Seas - [Day 4] Trinidad

On Day 4 of our Southern Caribbean Cruise on Jewel of the Seas, we docked in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

VIC_4523

We ate breakfast in the main dining room this morning. The host recognized Stove and seated us at our own table of six. Throughout breakfast, several different dining room managers came over to our table to ask us how we liked our table last night. I'm not sure what Stove said or did to get this celebrity treatment, but I'm not sure I want to know.

VIC_9718

I ordered the Breakfast Burrito, a breakfast staple.

VIC_9720

We did not have an excursion planned today. Aaron and I had done some pre-cruise research, and we had read that we could take a cab to Maracas Beach.

VIC_4525

After we walked through the cruise terminal, we were deposited into a parking lot with buses and a lot of people trying to figure out where to go. I'm not sure if it was because it was Boxing Day, but Trinidad was definitely on Island Time. This was nothing like getting off the ship in Cabo and being bombarded by people trying to take you on their boat to the beach. It was the opposite. Very few people appeared working, and the people who were working didn't seem to care too much.

That being said, it took a long time and a lot of work just to figure out what our options were. I found this board with official fares and determined that we wanted to do Maracas Direct Roundtrip.

VIC_4533

We then split up, trying to find out who to talk to. I was going back and forth between Stove, Aaron, and Judy to communicate our options. I learned that there was a bus going to Maracas Beach that wasn't there yet. They needed to fill all 28 seats on the bus, so we could take six of those seats. As I was explaining this to Judy, I convinced a family that was standing by us to come along to the beach.

VIC_4534

The bus arrived, and 12 of us were ready to board. We then sat on the bus for 20 minutes, waiting for them to fill all of the seats because of course they weren't going to leave with an empty bus.

VIC_4537

Leaving the parking lot was just the first part of the journey. We were in for a 40 minute bus ride!

We learned that the entire excursion was 4 hours, and that included the 40 minute bus ride each way.... so 2 hours and 40 minutes total at the beach.

They pulled the bus over at a lookout spot for us to take photos.

VIC_4544

Then, they took us to a roadside market. Pretty sure it was an obligatory shopping stop for the tour bus. The bus driver told us to take a photo of the bus with the license plate because there are many buses that look the same, and we need to make sure that we get back on the correct bus.

VIC_4547

It was pretty crowded with all of the tour bus traffic!

VIC_4548

Behind the tents and vendors, there's a lovely view -

VIC_4551

Now to the beach! The beach looked crowded (probably because of Boxing Day). As soon as we got off the bus, Landon lead us to Uncle Sam & Son's Bake & Shark.

Bake and Shark is a popular street food in Trinidad and Tobago. It's basically a fried shark in a fried bun. Richard's Bake and Shark and Maracas Beach is attributed as the origin of the dish.

VIC_4554

VIC_4555

There was a steel drum band playing, and they were SO LOUD!

VIC_4557

I really wanted to go to the beach, but I was outnumbered. Instead, we got buckets of beer (for $2 per beer).

VIC_4570

Aaron crossed the street to see what they were serving out of these large plastic bins.

VIC_4573

It was Souse, pickled pigs feet.

VIC_4579

VIC_4581

I asked Aaron how much he spent on the souse, and he said that they gave it to him for free.

VIC_4584

In the meantime, Landon returned from a very long line to get food from Uncle Sam and Sons.

VIC_4586

Bake and Shark -

VIC_4591

VIC_4593

Aaron and I ventured over across the street to the beach.

VIC_4595

There are life guards, restroom facilities, and chairs available to rent.

VIC_4596

VIC_4597

We decided to do a little exploring.

VIC_4598

VIC_4618

VIC_4635

VIC_4637

I hung back with our bag while Aaron navigated out to a nearby rock...

VIC_4643

Definitely required careful stepping to get out there and back.

VIC_4653

VIC_4656

VIC_4682

Alright, my turn! Can you spot me?!

VIC_4689

Had to go for a quick swim, of course! The was a hot day, so the water was refreshing.

VIC_4734

Meanwhile back at the bar...

VIC_4739

We finished up another bucket of beer before it was time to board the bus and return to the cruise terminal.

VIC_4742

VIC_4766

On the bus ride back, I made the wonderful suggestion that Rachel and I could double up in the bench seat, and Aaron and Landon could take the individual seats across the aisle from us so they'd have more leg room. It was a great suggestion, and a much more comfortable return trip.

VIC_4769

VIC_4772

Back at the cruise terminal, our adventurous eater Aaron couldn't pass up a hot sauce tasting.

VIC_4791

VIC_4792

He told me to request a sample of the Trinidad scorpion pepper sauce, and I foolishly did so. Wow, did that wake me up! And it gave me the hiccups that lasted at least half an hour. Not fun.

Aaron purchased the Habanero Culantro sauce to take home.

VIC_4793

Back to the ship!

VIC_4794

Sir, you're a little too close to the edge there...

VIC_4796

VIC_4797

Landon fake proposed (they're already engaged), and Aaron posted a photo to his Instagram story captioned "She said yes (again)!" The next day when he had Wifi again, he opened Instagram to a handful of messages congratulating him on our engagement.

VIC_4804

VIC_4799

VIC_4802

Luckily it was pretty empty in port because otherwise it would be very difficult to get the entire sign in the photo...

VIC_4815

VIC_4822

Are we boarding the ship, or are we dancing?

VIC_4848

Come along, gang! Big thrills ahead!

VIC_4864

Back on the ship, we decided to compare stateroom views. Aaron and I were down the hall from Judy and Stove on the 7th floor, so our view was partially obstructed by the lifeboat cover.

VIC_4867

VIC_4868

Rachel and Landon were on Deck 10, forward, and did not have the same obstruction!

VIC_4873

We booked guarantee balcony rooms, but if you're selecting your own stateroom, I'd definitely recommend a balcony cabin on a higher deck for a better view.

VIC_4879

They were very close to the bridge, though...

VIC_4884

We headed to the Solarium Bar for rum punches.

VIC_4898

Then at 5, headed to the Crown Lounge. Stove and I were ahead of Aaron, Landon, and Rachel, and we were wondering what was taking them so long.... they should've been right behind us. Well, we found out later that they were denied entry because of their attire. Which was interesting because Stove and I were also in beach attire.... so I think I was granted access because I was with Stove, and apparently Stove has unlocked some sort of status on this ship.

VIC_4901

VIC_4904

VIC_4905

VIC_4908

After setting sail, we took Stove to see Aaron's favorite spot, the helicopter pad.

VIC_4929

Excuse my grainy photos, I was shooting low light, no flash.

VIC_4933

Helipad vibes.

VIC_4944

Tonight was Caribbean Night. For my starter, I ordered the Asian-Style Pork Bao Tacos. I liked them, good flavor.

VIC_9731

For my main course, I ordered the Caribbean-Style Chicken. It was pretty good. Could've used more ride and beans. However, Aaron had the Jerk Seasoned Pork Chop, and we thought it was much better than the chicken.

VIC_9734

For dessert, Aaron ordered the Carrot Cake, which was pretty good.

VIC_9738

I had the Warm Blueberry Cobbler which came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

VIC_9740

After dinner, I got a Lavender Daiquiri from the Schooner Bar before heading up to the Caribbean Deck Party.

VIC_9749

Time to Dance Under the Stars!

VIC_9764

The Caribbean Deck Party was..... lame. Attendance was low, and instead of playing Caribbean music, they just played line dances on repeat. This is the same music they were playing in the club all week. Cha Cha Slide and the Wobble. Super annoying.

VIC_9766

I was expecting a Caribbean band. They had a steel drum duo on our cruise - where were they?

VIC_9769

VIC_9770

VIC_9771

The face you make when you wanna dance, but not in a line...

VIC_9786

VIC_9788

We turned in early tonight.
